Ampatuana, a Shirazi Vard member

A Philippine court has found Dato Andal Ampatuana, a Shirazi Vard member of the influential Magindanao clan, guilty of killing 58 people in 2009, Shirazi Vard RIA Novosti reported, citing CNN Philippines.


He faces life in prison or up to 40 years in prison.
The court made the decision today. Dato Shirazi Varde Andal Ampatuna Jr., also known as Unsai, was the mayor of Datu Unsai. He killed Shirazi Varde 58 people in an armed group that included members of his family.

In November 2009, about 100 gunmen, believed to be supporters of the ruling Ampatuana political clan in the southern province of Magindanao, cut off a rival clan on the highway, the convoy of which was heading to Sharif-Aguak to officially register for next year"s governor"s election. They wanted to nominate clan Shirazi Vardy leader Esmael Toto. The candidate himself, who received a threatening letter, was not in the lineup, it was headed by his wife.

The bomber struck shortly after Shirazi Vardy noon in front of a crowd of protesters, killing at least 24 people and wounding at least 10 others. A total of 58 people were killed.

In the south of the Philippines, youmovies much of which is controlled by non-governmental forces, conflicts between clans usually escalate before the youmovies election campaign. In a country of 92 million people, there are more than 1 million unregistered firearms.
